Audio-Technica ATH-PRO 700MK2 Professional DJ Monitor Headphones

Audio-Technica has long been one of our favorite audio companies and with the ATH-PRO 700MK2, headphone bass has never sounded better. Now increasing their presence in the DJ market, Audio-Technica will be delivering more than an average headphone with these bass-heavy DJ headphones.

Audio-Technica is mostly recognized for their world renowned headphone, the ATH-M50X. Although the M50X is one of our favorite headphones, Audio-Technica has been long manufacturing professional headphones with superior sound quality. Despite being released in 2011, the 700MK2 is one of Audio-Technica’s newest professional DJ headphones offering some seriously powerful bass.

The 700MK2 takes the M50X’s bass, affordability, and low-frequency features into a professional DJ monitor headphone. With some many headphones released since the 700MK2’s original release date, perceptions and review have long been mixed. So today we want to do a full review of this powerful DJ headphone. Testing and comparing its full potential as a live DJ.

The design of the 700MK2 features the best and the worst characteristics of an ideal DJ headphone. Being that the 700MK2 has the best durable design we have seen! This headphone seems to virtually indestructible (not really). But the build quality of this headphone is top notch and can withstand some serious damage!

When you are a DJ, you’ll find yourself traveling around a lot. You with need a pair of headphones that are sturdy enough to withstand some moderate to heavy usage. This is something that the 700MK2 excels in. Though the durability is great, the ear padding is not exactly comfortable.

The stock ear padding is very uncomfortable for long periods of listening. Though you can buy Audio-Technica’s Replacement Ear Pads for only $25 for a much-needed improvement. Without replacing the stock padding, the 700MK2s fit can cause discomfort only after five to ten minutes of listening. We would absolutely recommend buying replacement padding if you are seriously considering buying the 700MK2.

The accessories include two corded cables that allow listeners better mobility when plugged in. The Screw-on 1/4″ (6.3 mm) adapter, detachable 1.2 m coiled cable (max. 3.0m), detachable 1.2 m straight cable and the carrying pouch allows great capability options. Especially the spiraled cord as it eases movement when plugged into your laptop while DJing.

While the easily accessible travel pouch allows DJs to quickly fold away their headphones whether you’re on the go, at home, on going to your next show. The overall design quality is a bit flawed in comfort but definitely, makes up with durability and the included accessories.

Sound Quality

Audio-Technica has done a fantastic job in capturing the emphasis of music and with the 700MK2, it is no exception. Those of you who listen to club music, Hip Hop, EDM, and really anything bass-heavy will love the sound quality of this headphone.

During testing, the 700MK2 always received a strong reading in low frequencies and especially just by dropping the volume a little bit. By doing this we were able to determine the bass comparison to higher frequencies. Although when listening to music it may seem to overwhelm the song with bass at times, similar to the Beats Studios. But to be fair these are a professional DJ monitor headphone meant for DJing.

Aside from the overwhelming bass at times there a few minor problems we encountered. Higher pitched instrumentals such as flutes and clarinets are quieted and sound bit off compared to the overall song. Even though woodwinds are quieter it seems to be the practical decision for a DJ.

Additionally, the 700MK2 seems to block out most higher frequencies. On the same note, they are great for indoor use and perfect for a noisy indoor environment like a club. But if you are planning on using this headphone outside and near traffic, forget it. The 700MK2 doesn’t do well at all for outside use and especially next to lower frequency noises like car engines.

Currently, the price for a new pair of Audio-Technica’s ATH-PRO 700MK2 is $130 for Amazon. Considering other headphones like the Beats’ Mixr and Numark’s Red Wave in the same price range, are both great options for an entry level DJ headphone. Though out of those headphones, the 700MK2 outshines them all in the bass category.

When buying the 700MK2, users should really consider how bassy you like your music and what music you prefer to DJ. Different DJs prefer different types of headphones depending on the music, style, durability, and comfort.

No pair of headphones is perfect, but for the price, the ATH-PRO 700MK2 is a great entry level DJ headphone. The main problem lies with comfort for 700MK2. We all have different shaped head, so this headphone is bound not fit everybody comfortably. The overall value of this headphone is great for only $130 but there are some definite comfort and personal preferences to decide on before buying.

There is a reason why the ATH-PRO 700MK2 is still being bought as a professional DJ headphone all over the world today. Not only do these headphones have amazing durability but are regarded as a great headphone for upcoming DJs.

Audio enthusiasts regard the 700MK2 for their reliability for many still using their original pair years later. Granted there are a few problems such as with any headphone. Though the flaws are not really too much of a concern considering your objectives as a DJ should be to perform, monitor, and transition. The main problem lies with uncomfortable ear padding and depending on your head the headband may be too tight. The comfort can be improved drastically by purchasing the Audio-Technica’s Replacement Ear Pads. As for the headband, listeners will have to make a choice before buying on how big your head is.

The sound quality is great for live performances and monitoring music from a bass-heavy approach. While the included accessories allow necessary accessibility for different methods of listening. Lastly, the value is priced just right at about $130 for a brand new through Audio-Technica. Overall, Audio-Technica’s ATH-PRO 700MK2 is a great entry level DJ monitor headphone that will last you for years to come.
